It was a video game that would become the lead franchise of video game company Sega during the peak of the console wars. Sonic the Hedgehog was released on This Day in History.

After development included possibilities such as a kangaroo, rabbit, or armadillo, Sonic the Hedgehog was decided on to lead the game.

In the game for Sega Genesis, players control Sonic through a variety of levels, focused on a mix of exploration and Sonic's trademark fast speed. Sonic travels through loops and platforms, freeing trapped animals from enemy robots and also taking on Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the antagonist of the game. Sonic also collects rings. With rings, Sonic can take a hit, and with a certain number of rings, Sonic can get extra lives and travel to bonus stages to collect Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic was a massive success for Sega and the Genesis, in their 16-bit battle for market domination against Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The original game is still loved to this day, and has been released on numerous modern platforms from home consoles to phones.
