Zayre was a chain of department stores that competed with the likes of Wal-Mart, but finally faded away by 1990.

It was a chain of department stores that competed against Wal-Mart and K-Mart, sometimes in the same shopping center, but found its way into the retail graveyard by 1990.

Primarily operating in the eastern United States, Zayre began in the 1950s in Massachusetts. Over the next couple of decades it expanded.

The stores offered a variety of merchandise from clothing to furniture, beauty supplies to toys and electronics.

At one time, it was the country's fifth largest retailer. And, they were known for the catchphrase "We'd like to make Zayre your store!" and their six-sided logo.

However, competition and other issues led to a decline by the mid to late 1980s.

Eventually, Zayre was bought out by the Ames Corporation and was discontinued in 1990.
