In the second video above, you can see a live interview with Sheriff Hughes from News 4 This Morning!
With the announcement of his resignation, Sheriff Andy Hughes is already being missed by many in the Wiregrass.
"I've known him for a long time professionally and personally. He has been a wonderful asset and not only protecting our community," said Cynthia Green of Wiregrass Rehabilitation Clinic.
He will take the position as Assistant Director of Homeland Security, working alongside Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier. He says he will miss Houston County.
" Whenever I was conversing with my employees at the courthouse a few minutes ago, I definitely cried. I did. I’ve had a lot of good times here, accomplished a lot here, and grown very close to the employees and it’s very bittersweet to be leaving," said Hughes.
A statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on the addition of Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes:
"We are excited that Sheriff Andy Hughes is joining the leadership team at ALEA as an Assistant Homeland Security Director," Secretary Spencer Collier said.
"He is well respected in the law enforcement and public safety communities and his wealth of knowledge and experience will be an asset for the state."
