A great local event is helping raise awareness for autism.
Lots of participants gathered at Westgate Park Saturday afternoon to walk and raise funds for the complex brain disorder Autism. It was also a time for parents and families to support and encourage each other. This walk has been going on for twelve straight years.
"It's just very humbling and very overwhelming. This is all about the kids and their families
today and for them this means the world to them because this is like their child's dance recital
or baseball game,” said Fran Heisner, serving board director for the Autism Society of Alabama.
Center for Disease Control officials report that 1 in 68 children are affected by this disorder.
