Grace Hopper was a pioneer in the field of computers and computer programs.

Hopper was in the United States Navy and one of the very first computer programmers. She assisted in the development of the Harvard Mark I computer during the 1930s and 1940s. She also developed a compiler for programming computers.

Hopper had a long career in the Navy and even climbed to the rank of Rear Admiral. The USS Hopper, a Navy Destroyer, is named in her honor.

The term “de-bugging” as it applies to computers came from an incident in the 1940s where she encounter a bug, in this case a moth, inside one of the computers.
