An unofficial holiday on July 8th celebrates a hobby that continues to grow amongst Americans and throughout the world: video games!

Taking off in the late 1970s and early 1980s with arcade games and the Atari 2600 system, video games have become entrenched in the popular culture through this day.

Characters such as Mario and Sonic have had dozens of games over the past decades, and other franchises such as Madden NFL Football have equally endured.

Controlling these games has varied from simple joystick and button to elaborate controllers and even motion control systems like the Xbox Connect and Nintendo Wii.

Recently, gaming has even spread to cellular telephones and social network sites.

Be sure to tell News 4 what your favorite games and systems are in the comments below and vote in our poll question as well.
