An independent horror film with a tiny budget would go on to big success after being released on this day in history.

The Blair Witch Project was produced independently, mostly in the woods with actors that improvised much of the dialogue. The story is about the found footage of three people who seek out the legend of the Blair Witch, but are never heard from again.

The independent film was later distributed by Artisan Entertainment, and would become a hit with audiences and critics. The R-rated film grossed over $240 million on a budget of just $25,000.

It would inspire a sequel, video games, and even an animated parody called The Scooby-Doo Project.
