On this day in history in 1959, the Soviet Union launched the first man-made object to land on something other than Earth.

Luna 2, originally scheduled for launch on September 9th of 1959, blasted off from the Soviet Union on September 12th.

The probe carried a variety of instruments, and was one of the earliest probes to study the Van Allen Radiation Belt.

It hit the moon on September 14th, making history in the process.
