On this day in history, March 27, 1977, 582 people were killed in the world's worst aviation disaster, when a KLM 74 crashed into a Pan Am 747 on the runway of the Tenerife Airport on the Canary Island.

The Dutch KLM plane had apparently begun its takeoff run without final clearance and the Pan-Am jet was unable to get out of the way in time. The Dutch jet was traveling at 186 mph at the time of the collision.

There were only 70 survivors aboard the Pan Am jet, and only 15 escaped the crash unharmed.
