Two notable events, one involving space and one involving weather, occurred on this day in history.

Telstar 1 was a communications satellite that was launched on July 10, 1962. It took off on a Thor-Delta rocket into Earth orbit. The unmanned satellite would make history in multiple ways. Telstar 1 relayed the first live TV signal from across the Atlantic and was the first satellite to relay a telephone call through space. It also processed fax data. Radiation from a high-altitude nuclear bomb test caused Telstar 1 to fail prematurely and it would become inoperative in less than a year.

Hurricane Dennis, from the 2005 Atlantic Tropical Season, formed on July 4th of that year and would severely impact Cuba before making landfall in the United States on July 10, 2005. It would specifically impact the Florida panhandle between Pensacola and Navarre Beach. Wind gusts near 100 miles per hour were recorded in multiple locations. No extreme damage was reported in that area, but many locations received light to moderate damage. 14 deaths occurred in Florida as a result of Dennis. The storm also brought high winds and flooding rains to parts of Alabama, which also severely damaged crops there. The storm also brought some severe weather to Georgia and Mississippi. Since then, the name Dennis has been retired.
