They're a staple of grocery store aisle and bookstores around the country and the world, but it wasn't until this day in history many decades ago that the first crossword puzzle book was published.

In the early decades of the previous century, crossword puzzles involving connected words with clues, were becoming more popular and easier to find in newspapers.

On April 18th, 1924, the first actual cross word puzzle book was published by the company Simon and Schuster. It actually came with a pencil.

Nowadays, crossword puzzle books are quite common, ranging from easier dollar store books to the popular collections of New York Times crossword puzzles.
