He has been a video game icon since the 1990s, and next year, the “fastest thing alive” will be getting another animated series.

In the fall of 2014, “Sonic Boom” will debut in the United States on Cartoon Network. This will be a computer-generated, action-comedy series starring Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991 as the lead character in a video game for the Sega Genesis. The game became a huge hit, from its speedy and creative levels to its character with “attitude.” The game franchise spawned numerous sequels.

In the 1990s, it also inspired three animated series. One, “The Adventures of the Sonic the Hedgehog,” was a light-hearted, comedy-adventure series which drew on Looney Tunes for inspiration. Another, simply called “Sonic the Hedgehog,” was a darker, more story-based adventure series that later gained a passionate cult following. Those two were followed by the music-oriented “Sonic Underground.” In the 2000s, an anime series called “Sonic X” also ran for several seasons.
