Official Holidays of October 14th: Columbus Day (USA), Thanksgiving Day (Canada)

Columbus day is observed today across the United States.

It marks Italian explorer Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas, in 1492.

The holiday was first celebrated in New York, in 1792.

Today it's a federal holiday -- there's no mail delivery.

Most government offices that were still open in spite of the partial government shutdown will be closed today.

And, while many Americans observe Columbus day Monday, our neighbors to the north have their own holiday getting underway.

It's Thanksgiving Day in Canada.

Canadians traditionally celebrate the holiday the second Monday of October.

It shares several traditions with the U.S. version, including turkey as a main course at a big meal shared by families.
