Marking the 5th Anniversary of the Geneva and Houston County Floods

Five years ago this March, torrential rains caused major damage in Geneva and Houston Counties.

In March 2009, Geneva County EMA personnel reported several areas received seventeen inches of rain in just a few days.

It resulted in flash floods in the city of Geneva.

The Wiregrass received several million dollars in Federal assistance.

Since that historic weather event, transportation improvements have taken place.

Justin Barfield, an engineer in Geneva County explains that "there we've had some changes when it comes to placing structures on the rights-of-way on projects which has federal funds."

The March 2009 Weather event led to the replacement of six old wooden bridges in Geneva County. They were replaced with newly-designed concret structures.
