Roads in the southern Italian town of Montescagliosa appeared to have been ripped apart on Wednesday (December 4) after a landslide ripped through the town causing many buildings to sink.
The area around Montescagliosa had suffered from days of bad weather with heavy rainfall and flooding. But at midday on Tuesday (December 3) motorists were forced to abandon their cars as the tarmac from the road curled up and pulled apart.
Video pictures showed long swathes of road riddled with bumps and huge gashes.
The local supermarket has also sunk into the ground - with only the roof showing above street level.
Local fire services are in the area with gas and electricity services being temporarily shut down as local authorities seek to assess the damage.
