Artists from Japan's Self-Defense Forces are creating giant snow sculptures for a festival in Hokkaido.

Fifty people who won a lottery gathered at the Sapporo Odori Park to watch the artists as they worked.

The sculptors are using snow and water to glue different parts together to make three works.

One visitor said she was surprised to see the amount of snow they scrapped off. She said she will invite her parents to see the works next month.

The Sapporo Snow Festival runs for a week in early February. About 200 snow art works will go on display at 3 locations in Sapporo City.
