It was Coca-Cola’s “extreme” competition to Pepsi’s Mountain Dew, but Surge didn’t surge on the markets for very long.

When it was in development, the soft drink that would become known as Surge had a code name of “MDK,” short for “Mountain Dew Killer.”

Surge, based on a soft drink from Norway simply called Urge, was put into the market in 1997.

The citrus-flavored soda had about the same amount of caffeine as other drinks at the time, but also had carbohydrates.

It was marketed in an edgy style, but despite that, wasn’t a huge success and was eventually discontinued in 2003. It can still be found in its original “Urge” form in Norway.

Despite comparisons with a later beverage called Vault, Surge has notably less caffeine than Vault.
