Conservative Groups Targeted by IRS Testify

Tea Party groups and other organizations targeted by the IRS during their application for tax-exempt status, testified on Capitol Hill Tuesday (6/4).

The individuals representing various organizations were asked by the House Ways and Means Committee to share their stories during the hearing.

Becky Gerritson of the Wetumpka Tea Party, made an impassioned speech about government overreach and the extra scrutiny applied to her organization.

"I'm not here as a serf or a vassal. I'm not begging my lord for mercy. I'm a born-free American woman, wife, mother and citizen. And I'm telling my government that you've forgotten your place. It's not your responsibility to look out for my well being and to monitor my speech. It's not your right

to assert an agenda. Your post -- the post that you occupy exists to preserve American liberty. You've sworn to perform that duty and you have faltered," Gerriston said.

Sue Martinek of Coalition for Life of Iowa said she found it "very troubling" when she was asked not to picket or protest at Planned Parenthood.

"If we went there in prayer, would that be considered picketing, protesting?" Martinek said.
