BronyCan, a Canadian convention celebrating My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, took place over the past weekend.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has attracted a passionate fanbase of teenagers and adults, both male and female, since its premiere in 2010. The series has been praised by Bronies, one name for the fans of the series, for its animation, writing, characters, optimistic setting and music. A sizable number of Bronies create art, fan fiction, crafts, music, and even original animations and more based on the series.
The series is primarily produced in Vancouver, home to DHX Media/Vancouver. Many fan conventions have taken place in the US and across the world in the past year, such as Bronycon in Baltimore, Trotcon in Ohio and GalaCon in Germany. (You can find links to coverage of those conventions below!)
Over 800 fans attended the first BronyCan convention. Attendees could meet voice actresses such as Claire Corlett (voice of Sweetie Belle), Andrea Libman (voices of Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy) and Rebecca Shoichet (voice of Sunset Shimmer and singing voice of Twilight Sparkle) as well as community artists such as Rina-Chan (creator of fan animations such as “A Day at the Dentist”) and Forest Rain (community musician).
Contests such as Ponyville Idol were held, where fans be judged on voice acting. Fans could also listen to music performances and simply talk and play games with other fans. Merchandise was also available for purchase.
Overseas in Britain, the 2nd annual BUCK convention took place in Manchester during the same weekend as BronyCan.
