It's not Soylent Green, but a futuristic food is still turning heads at the South-by-Southwest conference in Texas.

You've heard of 3d printing for specialized manufacturing.

Take a look at 3d printing of food.

This machine makes pizza, using powdered ingredients to build a square of dough, a layer of sauce, and some cheese topping.
A heated plate then cooks the pizza.

The product developer says the printer could potentially be used by astronauts in space.

Food made from a powder may not sound much more appetizing than MREs -- the infamous rations known as meals-ready-to-eat.

The idea is that the powdered ingredients would be useable for years.
The designers say they still need approval from the FDA before they can serve the 3D printed food, but the company hopes the concept will one day help feed the world's ever-growing population.
