The 2013 Atlantic Tropical Season officially began on June 5th with the formation of Tropical Storm Andrea in the Gulf of Mexico.

Andrea, after forming about 300 miles to the southwest of Tampa, slowly moved in a northeasterly direction. This prompted the National Hurricane Center to issue Tropical Storm Warnings from the central Panhandle of Florida and through most of the western peninsula of the state as well.

At its peak, Tropical Storm Andrea packed 65 miles per hour, but never attained Hurricane status. In fact, it weakened slightly before making landfall in Florida's Dixie County. The main effects of the storm on Florida were deadly and dangerous rip currents that forced at least a dozen water rescues on the Alabama coast.

The storm also spawned several tornadoes along the Gulf Coast, including one that fell on a restaurant in the Gulfport community. The remnants of the storm knocked out power to thousands along the east coast, also prompting Tornado Watches to be issued in those areas in the process as well.
