Pac-Man, My Little Pony, Chess and Bubbles Among 2013 National Toy Hall of Fame Nominees

Twelve toys from past and present are up for nomination into the National Toy Hall of Fame for 2013.

The ten nominees for 2013 include a wide variety of finalists from bubbles to board games.

Aside from bubbles, the board games include the enduring classic Chess, which is played around the world in tournaments. More modern, Clue from Hasbro has sold for decades and even had a theatrical film based on the game.

There are two popular franchises from the 1980s that are still popular that are up for inclusion. These include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and My Little Pony. Ninja Turtles, based on a comic that was adapted into a popular animated series, has seen multiple movies and TV series to this day and a wide variety of figures and toys. My Little Pony has been known for its colorful mares and stallions with brushable manes, but has taken on a whole new cultural popularity with the most recent animated series, Friendship is Magic, which has drawn in teenage and adult fans as well as young children.

Little Green Army Men have been popular for decades, and played an important role in the Toy Story movie from 1995. They traditionally come in buckets of figures with many different poses and styles.

NERF toys, known for their softness, have exploded into a wide variety of merchandise ranging from simple plush balls, to complex “weapons” with soft missiles, playsets, and other types.
Pac-Man is a legendary arcade game where a player controls a character through mazes, trying to collect all the “power pellets” while avoiding deadly ghosts. The game has spawned numerous spin-offs and sequels, as well as a pair of animated series.

The scooter is a unique way for people of all ages to get around, with its standing board, handle, and typical two wheels.

The Rubber Duck is not just the favorite toy of Ernie from Sesame Street, but is an iconic toy of bathtime. Most of them typically squeak.
The Magic 8 Ball has been around for several decades and is a way to ask questions and get an answer right away…or, of course, shake it up until you get the answer you want.

Fisher Price Little People were introduced in the middle of the century and included with a variety of playsets based around various settings.
As of midnight Wednesday, a poll on the official National Toy Hall of Fame website had a strong and clear lead for My Little Pony with 60% of the vote, followed in second by Fisher Price Little People at 10% and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in third with 6%.

The two inductees for 2013 will be announced on November 7th. In 2012, Star Wars Action Figures and Dominoes were added to the Hall of Fame.
