Area schools are teaming up with the Salvation Army to help those in need.

Wiregrass elementary schools are kicking off their canned food drives.

Grandview Elementary and Hidden Lake elementary started today.

All of the canned food goes to the Salvation Army's Christmas boxes.

Last year they gave out over 1,700 boxes of food to those in need.

Linda Bates with the Salvation Army, says they expect a record number this year for Christmas box sign ups.

"It's good to teach the children to be giving also, to teach them at a young age to be loving to other people who are in need," Bates said.

Starting dates of drive:

Faine Elementary School – October 21
Morris Slingluff Elementary School – October 28
Montana Street Magnet School – November 1
Selma Street Elementary School – November 11
