(Dothan, AL) - Drivers running red-lights have caused more than 85 traffic accidents in Dothan, since June of last year. The Dothan Police Department wants to reduce that number by installing red-light safety cameras.

“There is a problem in Dothan with people running red-lights,” Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton said. “We answer five-hundred calls on average, per service, per day for the city of Dothan,” Benton said.

The Dothan Police Department says they do their best to monitor red lights at busy intersections, but say it isn't enough.

"We've actually written 190 citations this year that really does nothing to curb the problem, so we've looked into some other options help,” Benton said.

The primary solution so far is the installation of safety cameras. According to a safety report by American Traffic Solutions, the 24/7 video system would multiply police efforts on the streets and help reduce traffic accidents by as much as 60 percent.

"We will have digital officers at every intersection because of this system,” Dothan Police Department Sergeant Rachel David said. “We will be able to look at the file footage that comes in, so this system would be a tremendous asset,” she said.

David says a video system would also help with congestion at red-lights and increase over-all public safety.

"There are so many crashes resulting from somebody running a red-light,” David said. “They can be minor, but they can also be very serious, and it's our job to do anything we can to prevent these injuries and deaths,” she said.

Chief Greg Benton says if the proposal passes, the number of citations written would pay for the cost of the cameras.
