The City of Dothan's Housing Authority depends on this money annually.
This year HUD gave grants for more than $52 million to public housing authorities in Alabama.
The grants come from HUD's Capital Fund Program.
That program allows housing authorities to use the funds for any big renovations they might need.
The City of Dothan received more than $828,000 for their 670 apartments.
The money will be used to replace exterior stairwells at Johnson Homes and Ussery Homes, as well as renovating ten bathrooms in Johnson Homes.
"It's very valuable, we just wish we could get more because of the age of our public housing developments. We have some that are nearly 70 years old now and this is the primary grant monies we use to do major renovations," Executive Director Glenn Franklin said.
Some of the money will be used to reimburse the City of Dothan for the eight police officers who patrol the developments.
