Israel has begun to equip Merkava tanks with the new "Trophy" defense system: a miniature anti-missile system that detects incoming projectiles and shoots them down before they reach the armored vehicles. If successful, the "Trophy" system could radically alter the balance of power if the country goes to war again against Hezbollah guerrillas in neighboring Lebanon. Its performance could also have much wider implications as American troops and their Western allies battle insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. (AP Photo/Dan Balilty, File)

Three more American troops have been
reported killed in Afghanistan.
NATO says one was killed in an insurgent attack in eastern
Afghanistan while another died following a roadside bombing
yesterday in the south. The U.S. military says a third service
member died in an explosion today. That incident was also in
southern Afghanistan.
The deaths bring the number of international service members
killed in Afghanistan this month to 83. At least 49 were Americans.
June has been the deadliest month of the nearly 9-year-old war for
coalition forces.
Meanwhile, police say the bodies of 11 men have been found in
central Afghanistan. Some were beheaded. The deputy police chief
for the province says the men were killed because the Taliban had
accused them of spying for the government.
