MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A former letter carrier has pleaded guilty to stealing mail from her route in Orange Beach.

Prosecutors recommended probation for 34-year-old Tonya Calderon, who pleaded guilty Tuesday in Mobile to one count of theft of the mail by a postal employee.

Calderon admitted that last summer, she stole a pair of Verizon prepaid calling cards from mail addressed to residents on her route. Her fellow postal worker and roommate, Lori Waller, has indicated that she intends to plead guilty, as well.

Calderon's attorney, Paul Brown, says they did it out of financial hardship.

An Orange Beach resident who was expecting the Verizon card called local police in August. Postal investigators discovered that the card had been used at the Gulf Shore Walmart and spotted the defendants on the store's video surveillance system.
