BOSTON (AP) - Schools are closed today in Massachusetts,
Connecticut and New York, as the storm that brought punishing wind
and rain to the region over the weekend continues to dump rain on
parts of New England.
Utility crews, meanwhile, are making some progress in restoring
power. More than half of the 235,000 homes and businesses in New
Jersey that lost power over the weekend were hooked up again by
this morning.
At the peak of the storm, nearly a half million people were
without electricity in four states.
At least nine people died in storm-related accidents.
In Boston this morning, workers put up sand bags around the
entrance to a subway station near Fenway Park, as a nearby river
rose.
The severe weather led to near-record numbers of 911 calls in
New York City over the weekend. There were 65,000 calls from 11
p.m. on Friday until the same time on Saturday -- second only to
the number of 911 calls made during the 2003 blackout.
