Audits set for Ala. legslators' nonprofits

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's chief examiner says the state will start auditing two nonprofit corporations created by three legislators by the end of the year.

The two nonprofits have received $800,000 in state coal severance tax funds since their creation in 2006. The Birmingham News reported they have not undergone a required yearly audit by the Examiners of Public Accounts.

Sen. Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, and Rep. Mike Millican, D-Hamilton, incorporated the Marion County Community Development Association Inc. Bedford, Rep. William Thigpen, D-Fayette, and Fayette County Probate Judge William Oswalt created the West Alabama Development Association of Fayette County Inc.

Ronald L. Jones, chief of the Examiners of Public Accounts, on Monday attributed the failure to do the audits to a lack of resources.
