A wounded warrior in Virginia has a new home to help with the challenges he's now facing after the battlefield.
Jeff Goldberg was there for the big welcome home.
THE ARRIVAL OF SERGEANT JOHN PECK AT HIS NEW HOME IN FREDERICKSBURG HAD ALL THE MAKINGS OF A HEROES WELCOME...
JUST NOT ACCORDING TO JOHN.
"I really do not find myself a hero."
27 YEAR OLD MARINE SERGEANT PECK EARNED TWO PURPLE HEARTS AFTER SUFFERING A SERIOUS HEAD INJURY AFTER AN IED EXPLOSION IN IRAQ...ONLY TO THEN RETURN TO THE BATTLEFIELD IN AFGHANISTAN...WHERE IN MAY 2010 ANOTHER IED BLAST TOOK HIS ARMS AND LEGS.
"You have your rough days. I mean, mine are a little bit rougher."
THE TRUE HEROES...HE SAYS...ARE THOSE WHO DIDN'T COME HOME.
"They are gone and they will never come back, they will never heal, they will never see or feel, hear or be able to be touched again by their loved ones."
BUT PLENTY OF PEOPLE WANT TO SAY THANKS...AND THE TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION IS DOING JUST THAT BY PROVIDING JOHN, HIS MOTHER LISA, AND SERVICE DOG NASER WITH A BRAND NEW SMART HOME IN FREDERICKSBURG...EQUIPPED WITH LOWER HEIGHT APPLIANCES, ELECTRONIC, EASY TO REACH SHELVES...AND A STEREO SYSTEM JOHN ALREADY LOVES.
STANDUP: "The smart features are outside the house too. Right up there is a thermostat, right here is a camera, and these can be controlled by an ipad or iphone anywhere around the country."
ONE AFTER THE OTHER, THOSE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS HOME HAPPEN, SAYING THANKS...
"He is an inspiration to all of us."
"John, we just wish you the best."
AND LISA IS PROUD...BUT NOT SURPRISED...BY HER SON'S RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF STRUGGLE.
"That's the way I raised him."
JOHN PECK SAYS HE IS FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR THIS GIFT HE'S BEEN GIVEN...
"I think life is pretty good right now. I don't think I could top it."
WHILE COUNTLESS OTHERS ARE GRATEFUL FOR HIM.
