Wiregrass first responders are working even harder to save lives. They underwent helicopter training this afternoon.

For emergency department clinical coordinator Ben Ryals, preparation is everything.

That's why Ryals along with ten other Wiregrass rescue and law enforcement agencies underwent "air ambulance" training Saturday.

"It's very good, as everybody knows there's new people coming into the field everyday and so as you have those people come in they need to come out and experience this and talk to everybody and go through things like this to become better aware," said Ryals.

Life-flight and flat irons are commonly used helicopters in emergency situations. They can save lives in rural communities and provide quicker transportation than ambulances.

"If you have backup of the air ambulance you’re able to get patients transferred quickly. The other thing it helps with is transferring patients from hospital to hospital especially over long distance," said Ryals.

That's why organizers want everyone to get hands-on training.

"Actually had hands on were they could physically see where the helicopter's they could touch the helicopter's. They could see first hand exactly what the capabilities were," said Bruce McNeal, the Southeast Alabama Medical Center Director of Safety.

Whether on the ground or in flight, Wiregrass first responders are making every second count.
Today's training was free, organizers hope to put on more helicopter training events in the near future.
