Local Airman Sets Eyes Upon Olympics

Panama City- A 23 year old Senior Airman from Tyndall Air Force Base is trying to reach the pinnacle of rugby competition.

Marcus Satavu of the 325th Fighter Wing has already played with the U.S. Air Force Rugby Team, and the Combined Services Team. Now, he’s hoping to land a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team.

Satavu was born and raised in the United States, but his parents are from Fiji.
He discovered rugby there as a child, 17 years ago.

"All the kids were always playing rugby because it's the national sport and so I started picking it up. Ever since then, I got hooked,” said Satavu.

Satavu joined the Air Force after high school and made the Air Force Rugby team shortly after.

"Not only do you represent your country on the battlefield, but you also represent them on the playing field," said Satavu.

Becoming the second highest scorer on the exclusive team captured the attention of a lot of coaches, including some with olympic ties.

"I called up my Air Force coach and he said: 'Is this what you want? I can get this in the works,' so he got in contact with the USA coach and I picked up an invite in March."

Satavu expects to try out for the 2016 Olympic team this Spring.
If he makes the cut, Satavu will begin training full-time.
