The DOD has launched a comprehensive security review of military installations.
The action comes in the wake of Monday’s deadly Washington Navy Yard shooting. Secretary of Defense Church Hagel and Deputy Defense Security Ash Carter are leading the two department-wide reviews.
The second will review practices and procedures for granting and renewing security clearances, especially those held by contractors.
A separate, independent panel will conduct its own assessment of installation security and the clearance process.
According to the office of the Director of National Intelligence, about $5 million federal workers hold some type of clearance.
