Americans gathered at cemeteries, memorials and monuments nationwide to honor fallen military service members on Memorial Day, at a time when combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindles.

President Barack Obama laid a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. He urged the crowd not to forget that the country is still at war.

Vietnam War veteran Richard Traiser helped deliver a three-volley salute in Portland, Maine. He said he often thinks of those he lost in his Marine platoon to this day.

In New Orleans, Chris Peters of Georgia attended a ceremony at the National World War II museum. He said his grandfather served in World War II and "all the stars aligned" for the visit.
