Wiregrass Veterans Alliance to Hold 4th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park
(Dothan, Ala.)- The Wiregrass Veterans Alliance will be hosting its 4th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 31 at Sunset Memorial Park. The service will begin at 2:30 p.m. with featured guest speakers Col. Sonny Moore and Congressman Bobby Bright. This event’s emcee will be Dothan Alabama’s Mayor Mike Schmitz.
At 3:00 p.m. there will be a moment of silence to honor all military men and women who have died in service to their country. Attendees will also have the opportunity to place flowers on the graves of veterans, which will be marked with American flags.
Other events will include live patriotic music, a free hamburger dinner, military aircraft and vehicle displays, and appearances by the Ft. Rucker Honor Guard, a professional skydiving team, and the Patriot Guard Riders.
Among the patriotic musical acts, Newton resident Jamie Clark will be singing an original song about what it means to be a military wife. “I wrote the song ‘The Soldier Left Behind’ a few months before my husband CW3 Donald V. Clark was deployed,” she said. “He was killed on November 15, 2008 in Mosul, Iraq. Today, 18 months later, it has a new meaning.”
Ed Pritchard, coordinator for the Wiregrass Veterans Alliance, said the ceremony honors all veterans who have lost their lives during wartime. “It’s a day of thanking them and their families for the extreme sacrifice they’ve given our country,” he said. “It’s a sign that we should never forget them for what they have done for our country.”
