148 soldiers return to Fort Benning after delay

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Soldiers from the 60th Engineer Company, 11th Engineer Battalion have returned to Fort Benning after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan.

Saturday's homecoming ended a frustrating six days of delay for the 148 soldiers and their families.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports Sunday the company was grounded in Europe after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland grounded air traffic.

While in Afghanistan, the soldiers put up large structures and provided heavy construction support for United States and coalition forces.

It was their second deployment to southwest Asia.
