GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - A Vietnam War veteran has received a Purple
Heart medal more than 41 years after he was injured.
Thomas Steakley says he long thought he had been given the
Purple Heart after he was shot when his unit was ambushed in
But the 60-year-old says he discovered that his Army records didn't document that he was injured in combat in 1986 when he was being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.
He says he applied twice for the medal after discovering it wasn't documented but he was denied both times.
He eventually sought the help of a local attorney who urged him
to pursue a different type of appeal.
That effort was confirmed on March 8 after all the papers were confirmed.
