EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) - A Panhandle-based bomb technician plans to honor his fallen comrades by completing a 5k run in Afghanistan wearing his full, 65-pound bomb suit.
Master Sgt. David R. Larriva is set to compete with dozens of others runners Thursday in the EOD Memorial 5K Run at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Larriva will be the only runner wearing his bomb disposal body armor.
His wife, Diana, a Panhandle elementary school teacher, told The Northwest Florida Daily News her husband's goal is to finish the race in 45 minutes and to pass at least one other person along the way.
She says his larger goal is to bring awareness to the people who have died while protecting troops and civilians from explosives.
