KABUL (AP) - About 1,000 U.S. Marines and 150 Afghan troops are
continuing a joint military operation in southern Afghanistan.
A Marine spokesman says troops engaged militants in an area known to be a Taliban stronghold. He says 22 such operations are happening across Afghanistan.
The goal is to disrupt Taliban supply and communications lines
in a strategic valley in Helmand province.
The operation began Friday.
Elsewhere, NATO is reporting the death of a U.S. service member
on foot patrol in eastern Afghanistan. A spokeswoman says the
American was killed yesterday by a bomb.
Meanwhile, U.S. military authorities say a NATO airstrike has killed six militants planting roadside bombs.
