10 insurgents killed in Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) - Eight Afghan police officers have been killed and another wounded in a Taliban ambush in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province.

Officials say insurgents ambushed a police patrol.

A NATO statement today says its troops killed 10 suspected militants, including a senior Taliban commander, in a raid in southern Afghanistan Saturday.

The statement says senior Taliban commander Maulawi Hassan and his associates were killed in a "precision operation" at an isolated compound in southern Helmand province. NATO says there were no civilians involved.

NATO says a rocket slammed into the main NATO military base in the south yesterday, killing a contractor and wounding six others.

Two NATO soldiers were killed in a "hostile incident" in the same region yesterday.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of resurgent Taliban activity.
