One local elementary school is starting a new program which will provide an opportunity for a select number of students to perform flag protocol duties.
Fifth graders at Highlands Elementary were asked to submit an essay on what the American flag means to them.
Fifteen students were selected by a group of Ft. Rucker soldiers to be members of the 2010-2011 flag corps.
Principal Vicki Davis explains what duties the students in the flag corps will have.
“They will be responsible for putting the flag up in the mornings and taking down the flags every afternoon. They will also be taught protocol for the flag, some citizenship things about what the flag means, the history of the flag.”
An honor detachment from Ft. Rucker will provide training in flag etiquette and proper handling of the flag for the selected students.
