Sessions Calls for ‘Strong, Sustained’ Action on Border Security

“We know how to solve the problem; what we don’t know is why President Obama remains unwilling to do so.”

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement today following the Senate’s passage of a $600 million bill to fund certain border initiatives:

“Make no mistake: while this small measure can have some value, if it is not followed by strong, sustained action it is yet another gesture without consequence. Right now, it seems more like an effort to receive positive press than to genuinely improve the critical border situation.

“Our border is in chaos with widespread violence, rampant arms and drugs smuggling, and human trafficking. We need bold, sustained national action that adjusts to changing circumstances.

Instead, the Obama Administration has ignored calls to expand the very successful Operation Streamline, severely curtailed the 287g grant program for local law enforcement, and failed to complete the border fence. In fact, the only bold action the Administration has taken on immigration is to sue Arizona in order to prevent enforcement—even as drug wars turn Phoenix into the kidnapping capital of the United States.

“Making matter worse, President Obama has appointed top officials in his administration who are insufficiently committed to enforcing the law.

For instance, ICE Director John Morton announced he would not necessarily fulfill his duty if Arizona reported illegal aliens to federal authorities. More recently, the union representing ICE agents issued a unanimous vote of no-confidence in Morton, saying that he was hampering agents from simply doing their jobs.

An internal draft memo from the Department of Homeland Security even discussed granting backdoor amnesty to illegal immigrants by stalling proceedings for deportation.

“It is no wonder that the American people have lost their patience with Washington. The core responsibility of the federal government is to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law. But year after year, on the issue of illegal immigration, Washington has deserted this responsibility. Contrary to the assertions of some, the border can certainly be secured—all that is required is the will to do so. Unfortunately, that will has been sorely lacking from President Obama.

“The ‘Masters of the Universe’ in Washington are always proposing new plans to deal with the massive illegality at the border. But the one thing they are not willing to do is what has been proven to work: a strong physical presence at the border and diligent enforcement of existing law. We know how to solve the problem; what we don’t know is why President Obama remains unwilling to do so.”
