DENVER (AP) -- Denver police say a hit-and-run accident Friday night killed two small children and critically injured a woman as the three crossed a street.
Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says a 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and a 7-year-old died after being taken to Children's Hospital Colorado.
The Denver Post reported that police were continuing to investigate the hit-and-run near East 14th Avenue and Yosemite Street, an intersection west of the city's downtown area. It happened after sunset and just before 8 p.m.
The Post reports police were looking for the vehicle that fled the scene. Witness reports identified it as being a white SUV, possibly a Cadillac.
QUANTICO, Va. (AP) -- Military officials say a Marine who shot two of his colleagues to death and then killed himself at a Virginia base was a tactics instructor who joined the corps seven years ago.
The Marines said Saturday that 25-year-old Sgt. Eusebio Lopez gunned down 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Sara Castromata and 23-year-old Cpl. Jacob Wooley on Thursday in barracks at the Quantico base near Washington.
Lopez, of Pacifica, Calif., was a teacher at a school that tests Marines who want to become officers and his specialty was machine-gunner. Castromata, of Oakley, Calif., was a warehouse clerk for the school. Wooley, of Guntown, Miss., was a field radio operator and also worked with the school.
The Marines have not described the relationship between the three or released a motive for the shooting.
DENVER (AP) -- Investigators are saying for the first time that a man who was killed in a gunfight with Texas authorities is a suspect in the shooting death of Colorado's state prison system chief.
El Paso County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said Saturday that evidence gathered in Texas after the death of Evan Spencer Ebel (EH'-bul) provides a "strong, strong lead" in the slaying of Tom Clements, director of the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Kramer stressed that investigators have not yet confirmed a link between Ebel and Clements' death.
Clements was shot Tuesday night when he answered the door of his home in a rural area north of Colorado Springs.
Ebel, who was paroled from a Colorado prison in January, was fatally shot by authorities in Texas Thursday.
The mother of a coal miner killed in a Utah mine collapse says he narrowly averted death in an earlier accident at a nearby mine that killed six miners and three rescuers.
Julie Jones says her son, Elam Jones, was preparing to begin his shift at the Crandall Canyon mine in August 2007 when a collapse buried miners in the section where he was to have worked.
The 28-year-old Jones was killed Friday when a tunnel roof collapsed at the Rhino Mine about 10 miles west of his hometown of Huntington. Co-worker Dallen McFarlane was injured but has been released from a hospital.
Julie Jones is a Huntington city councilwoman. She says her son was proud to be a coal miner and didn't view his job as particularly dangerous
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A tree that gave Anne Frank hope as the Jewish teenager hid from Nazis for more than two years is taking root at nearly a dozen sites across the United States in hopes of promoting tolerance.
Eleven saplings grown from seeds taken from the chestnut tree that stood outside the Amsterdam home in which Frank and her family hid are being distributed to museums, schools, parks and Holocaust remembrance centers through a project led by The Anne Frank Center USA.
The first sapling will be planted in April at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Other saplings are being sent to a New York City park honoring 9-11 victims, a Little Rock, Ark., school that was the center of a desegregation battle and sites in Massachusetts, California, Idaho, Michigan and Washington state.
