Tropical Storm Fabio is strengthening in the Pacific and could become a hurricane by Friday night or Saturday but is expected to stay well offshore of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said late Thursday that the new storm's maximum sustained winds were 60 mph (97 kph)

Fabio's center is about 470 miles (756 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving west at 10 mph (16 kph).

Farther out at sea, Hurricane Emilia continues to weaken, with its maximum sustained winds dropping to 85 mph (137 kph). It's now a Category 1 storm.

Emilia is centered about 1025 miles (1650 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California and is moving west at 12 mph (19 kph).
