The eighth tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to strengthen on Thursday, but forecasters say it poses no threat to land.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said late Wednesday the depression was about 550 miles (885 kilometers) east of Bermuda with winds of 35 mph (56 kph). The depression is moving north at 17 mph (27 kph) and is expected to turn toward the northeast Thursday, keeping the storm over the open waters of the North Atlantic.

The depression could become a tropical storm Thursday.
