British scientists have developed a ground-breaking technique -- for creating vaccines -- which could be used to tackle diseases that threaten both human and animal health.
They are using a particle accelerator -- in Oxfordshire -- that enables structures to be examined at atomic level. They've already created a synthetic vaccine -- which is more stable and safer -- against the animal disease -- foot and mouth.
The same techniques are being applied to human diseases -- with cheaper vaccines in prospect.
Professor David Stuart, Oxford University says, "... to be able to look at in great detail, the virus shell, see the atomic structure, re-engineer it with chemistry, and then look at the properties of that, check it works, and amazingly it works very well so far."
And, Dr. Andrew MacAdam, National Institute for Biological Standards and Control adds, "It is the potential of the vaccines to reintroduce disease and an approach like this, which doesn’t use any virus during the production of the vaccine, has immense potential."
