A sandwich was thrown at Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday (May 8) during a school visit, local media reported.
Gillard was visiting Marsden State High School at Logan, near Brisbane, when the incident happened.
The sandwich hit a fellow student and was recorded by local TV cameras.
Gillard said the incident was just a bit of "high jinks".
"One kid thought they might just be a little bit naughty and had a little squealing sense of delight as they did it. A bit of high jinks, a bit of high jinks," she said.
The student in question, Kyle Thompson, has been suspended for 15 days for the incident but denies he did it, local TV reported.
"I hit the sandwich out of the kid's hand because he threw it and there was another one so I hit it out of his hand," he said.
When asked why the prime minister was targeted he said, "maybe because nobody likes her."
Although there was the occasional boo, most children cheered and jostled to shake Gillard's hand during the school visit.
