ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Preliminary results show Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has taken a nearly insurmountable lead in the oil-rich nation's election.
After certifying the results of 28 of Nigeria's states and its capital, figures released Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission show Jonathan has 19.4 million votes out of a total of 31.1 million votes already counted.
His nearest opponent, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, has 8.7 million votes.
Results from eight of Nigeria's 36 states have yet to be formally announced in Abuja (ah-BOO'-juh), the country's capital. But Jonathan also had won enough votes in those states counted by Sunday night to avoid triggering a runoff.
Nigeria has a long history of violent and rigged polls, but international observers says Saturday's poll went smoothly despite some reports of irregularities.
