Navies Evacuate Sick Crew Member From Pirated Ship

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -Wing Cmdr. Paddy O'Kennedy says a Tunisian crew member suffering from possible appendicitis was taken from the MV Hannibal II to a Thai warship by inflatable boat on Friday.

He was then moved by helicopter to a larger German warship with better medical facilities.

The Tunisian master of the ship had contacted authorities on
Dec. 16 saying he had a sick crew member and the pirates had agreed
to allow the man to be picked up.

The MV Hannibal II has been held by pirates since Nov. 11. It is
believed to be the first such evacuation arranged between pirates
and international navies.
