MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Three attackers are dead and two others detained following a failed assassination attempt against the mayor of a town in northeast Mexico.
The mayor of the Monterrey suburb of Garcia escaped injury, and is praising the police bodyguards who protected him.
Mayor Jaime Rodriguez says he owes his life to the bodyguards,
who returned fire from his bulletproof SUV and repelled the attack.
Rodriguez says former police officers were responsible for a previous attack on his town's police.
But he said he didn't know if they were also responsible for
Friday's attempt on his life.
The governor of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz reported Friday
that another mayor in his state is missing.
